If you or your child struggles with eczema, you might notice flare-ups becoming more frequent or intense in the summer months, especially during a heatwave. You’re not imagining it. Heat, sweat, and even sunscreen can all act as triggers for sensitive, eczema-prone skin.
As a Consultant Dermatologist (and a mum), I see this often in clinic and at home. Below are my top dermatologist-approved tips to help soothe, calm, and protect skin through the warmer season.
1. Keep Clothing Light and Breathable
One of the simplest and most effective things you can do is switch to loose, lightweight clothing made from natural fabrics, like cotton or linen. These reduce heat retention and friction, two major aggravators of eczema. Avoid tight-fitting, synthetic fabrics wherever possible, especially during hot days or overnight.
2. Cleanse Gently After Time Outdoors
After being outside, it’s important to wash away sweat, sunscreen, and pollen, all of which can linger on the skin and cause irritation.
Use cool or lukewarm water and a gentle, non-foaming cleanser. I recommend CeraVe Hydrating Cleanser, which effectively cleanses without stripping the skin barrier – essential for eczema-prone skin.
3. Choose the Right Summer Moisturiser
Your moisturiser might need an update for summer. Look for something lightweight and hydrating, but still effective.
- In my own home, I use Aveeno Cream on my toddler – it’s cooling, absorbs quickly, and is a great everyday option.
- For patients with more sensitive or inflamed skin, I often recommend Avène XeraCalm A.D Cream. It’s richer but still breathable, and it comes in sterile, preservative-free packaging, which is ideal for compromised skin barriers.
4. Know When to Escalate Treatment
While emollients and cleansers help with day-to-day management, more severe eczema often needs more than just moisturisers.
Depending on your individual case, we may need to consider:
- Prescription topical corticosteroids or non-steroidal creams
- Phototherapy (light treatment)
- Tablet or injectable treatments for long-term control
